(RTTNews) - The Internet Society has created an Internet Hall of Fame to honor people who created and built the Internet. Among the first class of inductees were former Vice President Al Gore, Vint Cerf, Tim Berners-Lee, Mitchell Baker, and Brewster Kahle. This inductees were honored at the first inaugural award ceremony on Tuesday in Geneva, Switzerland.

"This historic assembly of Internet visionaries, innovators, and leaders represents an extraordinary breadth of vision and work," Internet Society president and CEO Lynn St. Armour said in a statement.

"While the inductees have extremely diverse backgrounds and represent many different countries," Armour continued, "each individual has an incredible passion for their work."

People can be inducted into one of three reasons, including being instrumental in the early design and development of the Internet, making outstanding technological, commercial, or policy advances to expand the Web, and contributing to the global growth of the Internet.

The inductees came from nine different countries and included 11 Ph.D.s, 11 published authors, one Academy Award winner, and one Nobel Prize Winner.
