What does a wheel chair, an IV pole, surgical tools and a ultra-sound machine all have in common? Answer: they all wound up in Sierra Leone after being used and then discarded by hospitals or nursing homes in the New York area. Who saw the need and knew the answer to the questions? Answer: The AFRA Foundation and its founder and Executive Director Danielle Butin.

AFYA means “good health” in Swahili.  To make AFYA a success has taken more than good health or good luck.  It has required extraordinary organizational skills and the ability to work with people of vastly different backgrounds and goals. It takes passion.  And that, as you will see this morning, Danielle Butin has in spades.
