Barbara Kopple (SHS '64) to exec produce Maria Finitzo’s “The Dilemma of Desire”

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Barbara Kopple is to executive produce a forthcoming feature-length documentary film that advocates for the democratization of sexual pleasure.

Helmed by Peabody Award-winning director Maria Finitzo and Chicago production outfit Kartemquin Films, The Dilemma of Desire will explore the “clash between the power of gender politics and the equally powerful imperatives of female sexual desire.”

The film will document conceptual artist Sophia Wallace, college professor Dr. Stacey Dutton, scientist Dr. Lisa Diamond, and industrial designer and entrepreneur Ti Chang as they utilize their life’s work to alter the culture surrounding the myths and lies women have been taught about their sexual desire and their bodies.

The Dilemma of Desire is the next conversation after #MeToo and #TimesUp,” said Finitzo in a statement. “The film will push and pull on long held outdated beliefs about female desire to present the truth about what women really want. True equality will come only when society arrives at a place of understanding and acknowledgement that all women are sexual beings, entitled to live their lives fully within the expression of their desire. There can be no equality without the equality of pleasure.”
